Freakoween night found the nocturnally hyper active funseeking freak out again this time downtown at the G. Love & Special Sauce at the freak esteemed Quest Club. Garrett aka G. always performs like the pro he is & Special Sauce are. I’d been exceedingly anticipating this uprising freak-for-all frenzied folly fixated live joint falling by the one & freakin’ only Special Sauce fronted by surreal scene hero freak supafriend G. Love. The show featured many of my most prized faves like “Don’t Drop It”, that freakadelic super stony weed tune (name escapes freak), “Booty Call”, “This Ain’t Livin”, “Cold Beverage”, “Baby’s Got Sauce”, “Fishing Song”, “Kick Drum”, “Give It To You”, as well as all the encores “Night of the Living Dead”, “Parasite”, “Superhero Brother”, “Gimme Some Lovin”, some dirty song (w/ slightly stoopid), “Astronaut”. So as long as Garrett’s musical mission intersects with mine, I know we’ll be hanging out whichs looks to go on forever. Smirking song soother G-led GL&SS at the expansive flipping massive dancefloored Quest is about as expando kripto cronk as you can get live wise in this town. We wish highest props to G. & the band as well as the way cool tour merch guy Frank. The freak’s personally hoping to talk to Garrett again sometime soon interview style. With that optimism installed, don’t miss any chance to see the freak’s funkmop raghop all time fave bands GL&SS. Here’s a random quote: Oh, yeah. ~G. Love

The Radiators did their legendary thang of overtly yet hugely one upping from great to the best over the 2 long robust nights at the comfy Aragon Ballroom. This the 2nd freakingasmic night “Dance of the 7 Deadly Sins” rose past climax many times ending in what Dave Malone reputedly called (though quite inebriatedly in the wee hours party realm) possibly that this is sad to be among the top best Rads show in their soon to be 27 years as a demented rock band. The show’s opener jam went into “Spanish Moon” [“there were hookers & hustlers & bad cocaine”] into “Salty Jane” & other highlights of the 1st set were: “The Girl with the Golden eyes”, “7 Devils”, “Freakin at the Freaker’s Ball (to the tune of Shel Silverstein’s w/ modified lyrics), “City of Refuge” morphed into “Jump into the Fire” before returning to “City of Refuge”. Then 2nd set highpoints were the whole filthy thing in all its funk so here it is: “these boots are made for walkin”, “Law of the Fish” > “I walk on guilded splinters” > “cannibal girls” (they do exactly what you think they might do...) > Huddie Ledbetter’s “out on the western plains”, “Where were you at?” > “Hot Lube” > “green River” > “(I’d rather be) Blind Crippled & Crazy”, “Come Together”, “I’m gonna move to the outskirts of town” > “Little Sadie” > “Tomorrow Never Knows” (tease) > “Magic Bus” & for the encores: “Dead Flowers” > “Pressure Drop” > “Dead Flowers”, “Paint it Black” (!). The Dance of the 7 Deadly Sins” had ruined yet another freak down to the soul. Me. But I mean that in the best of ways. A time of my life was had by me & others too. Speak Zeke. The language of choice (moist). The One that matters (most).

With one of the freak’s dearest fave parties in da universe upon him, a no-brainer easily would link the scenescaping freak to the scene of the 19th annual Krewe of DADs’ “Sin is Inn” Halloween Fishhead bash this year at the Aragon Ballroom in the Holiday Inn Metrodome near 7 Corners starring the new orleans Radiators with special guest Mark Mullins on trombone (from Nola’s Bonerama & other dangerous bands). This was just the sinister start of yet another Halloween week-end freak-for-all in as always true fshhead funky style with freaks streaming into town from nearly everywhere as we encourage more every years slowly & subtly letting select others on to our much beloved little secret. The Rads, with style & scorch, rhapsidizingly percolated the Minny (our Minneapple with a bite out) holy fishhead prayergrounds in the form of the confines of the Aragon Ballroom. Both the stage & dancefloor were lit up with insane amounts of intoxicating swirling energies & surging excitements multiplying exponentially with the rhythm as well as the resulting unpredictable dance. The freak was greeted by countless intelligensia & other interesting freakness. Looking around I saw clever intellectual propery (no typo we were all elaborate props). Some of the songs that made me move & smile more than others were: 1st set: racy body throbbing mad medley “Hardcore” > “Pump It Up” > “Shake Your Body to thev Ground”, “Didn’t He Ramble?”, rambunctious “Denang”, “Waiting For the Rain” (timmy fave), “Crazy Mona” (freak fave) & in the 2nd set: soul sonic “Sylvie”, game on “Jack o’ Diamonds”, stone tonic “I’ve Got a Feeling” > “Into the Mystic”, “Early Bird Cafe” & “Lovely You”. As the treux funky Dr.John might say this twas “such a night!”.

This magnificent night saw the freak happily among many friends at First Avenue's beloved Mainroom for a rave up freakified thunderstorm of a helluva show by the one & only Drive-By Truckers, who are quickly becoming many's new fave band (on a nat'l level even it seems). The DBTs have seen success with the release of 04's "The Dirty South" [see page 28] & touring among their loyal party bender contender following who see them as raging real life party going hard smoking heroes of rock. Some of the nuggets bestowed upon us that night were phenom from dark to light causing sonic numbers like "Decoration Day", "Carl Perkin's Cadillac", "Let There Be Rock" & "Road Cases". All the tunes were energetic & fun as some things that are currently illegal. Anytime you can catch this unbelievable Georgia band, you gotta go for it. You'll have the time of your life. So look for me while you're at it. Dance your freaking head off. Do a Drive-By today.

Holy roly poly wow.. this is a huge almost circus worthy show & a freaking half. What I'm talking about is when the freak got freakwently freaked when he got to frequent the Cabooze for the triple threat freakout of the Rising Star Fife & Drum Band (also from rural Mississippi) , Dirty Dozen Brass Band & our dear friends the North Mississippi Allstars. Damn, is this a hot to trot combo of styles & music. I unfortunately missed the RSD&F show but I heard it was a deeply rootsy throw down joy with NMA's Luther jumping in for some guitar for extra fire. Dirty Dozen's set was a truly rocking socking dirty duty demensia of brassy soul & party style vibe. The North Mississippi Allstars (especially with Evil Uncle Timmy at their sound helm) simply cannot be stopped. And why should they be? It was full on southern revival electro hill boogie potently unleashed all the live long night with intensely wandering tendencies toward heavy rock, fervent swerving sexy funk & searing sinister blues too nasty to expound upon. Many of the freak's personal fave tunes were played marking & sparking this wonder infused occasion to his utter delight & fun was had as far as the freak eye could see (especially down on the dancefloor). Dancing, it seems, is always the first order of biz at a North Mississippi show. Besides busting them moves, partying afterwards is always a virtual blast with these kind cats as well & this evening was no exception. Hats (& helmets for you die-hards) off to this da baddest band in da wide wanna jamba land. G 'head. Take my way, Speak my language.

The freak has out & about to the official after party of Marcus Schmid & Ginger's wondrous wedding & celebration. There was a preinstalled cover band that included Schmarcus's dad keeping the dancefloor active. Then the main event went down as Marcus sang a sweet song for his new happy bride, which happened to be a WookieFoot song "Put It Down" performed with soul by all involved (Matt Cartee, Mark Murphy, Scooter). The newly joined couple lit up the huge room the rest of the beautiful night & it was a pleasure to share time with friends once again. Music will always be an intregral part of Marcus's life & this event was proof positive of that. Cheers to them.

October 2, 2004 (later)

Apparently the West Bank wasn't safe as the freak returned to his birthplace for more high minded fly bodied fun & frollic at the Wookie Foot show going late at the freak frequented Cabooze. I always have an engaging sensory asunder storming good time at these bliss fests. It's alway a blast seeing & chillin villainously with longtime bro in funk Matty C. Local music can only hope for peaking freak seeking nights like this. Support you local tribe & their musing whims. Do it now.

The funk following free floating freak found his low key wandering way down the the hottest show in town this time jamba funk soul band Soulive performing at the freak friendly (new & improved) Fine Line Music Cafe. The opening duo was really interesting even though there name cleverly escapes me. Statuesque guitarist Eric Krasno aka Kraz led the steamy funk multi front attack meshing brilliantly with his cohorts the brothers Evans on drums & crazed keys (Alan & Neil) with a feverish fury unlike many seen around here. The frenzied dancers were dazzled as the funk heated up the night like a hot southern night. Soulive exhibited wonder spawning grooves & such merriment that we could not seem to get enough. They are welcome back any & all the time. As the old (cheesiest) song says: Don't fight it. Soulive don't lie.
